UNH-IOL Announces Industry Sponsors for STEM High School Summer Internship

High Tech Bound Paid Computer Science Summer Internship

DURHAM, N.H. July 12, 2018— The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) has received generous donations from industry partners Dell EMC, Verizon, Alexander Technology Group, Cisco, HPE, Liberty Mutual, QA Cafe, and Senet to support the expansion of HighTech Bound, its high school summer internship program.

HighTech Bound is a unique opportunity for high school juniors entering their senior year to gain experience working in the laboratory with dedicated mentors. The UNH-IOL, an independent provider of broad-based testing and standards conformance solutions for the networking industry, has hired a record number of 14 interns for the four-week summer internship due to donor support. The program is designed for student interns to investigate emerging technologies, gain hands-on experience, research potential solutions, gain interpersonal communications skills, as well as prepare them for a future education in the technology field. Some of the projects include interactive displays to increase communication with visitors and customers, updating a demonstration of an IoT based Smart Home with the latest technologies, and prototyping both hardware and software for complex electrical signaling measurements.

“This is a very exciting year for the program given the record number of interns that we have the opportunity to introduce to the work environment, STEM field, and to the UNH campus,” said Jeff Lapak, associate director of the UNH-IOL. “This type of STEM activity is critical to ensuring the size and skill of the future industry workforce and we are excited to work with the sponsors of this program to help enhance that pipeline.”

HighTech Bound is a stepping stone for students interested in computer science or electrical engineering who hope to attend the University of New Hampshire following high school. The continuation of employment with the UNH-IOL is highly encouraged throughout students’ college career. Employees supplement their academic training by operating, testing, and actually improving real products from local and Fortune 500 companies. Student employees gain experience that results in a smooth transition from college into the job market.
