Like so many industries, the networking industry is looking to reduce energy consumption.
Ethernet equipment manufacturers are in the midst of a standardization effort to reduce the power they
consume. IEEE 802.3az is the developing standard the will define how networking products cut energy
usage by introducing a “sleep” mode. If you’re responsible for testing Ethernet PHYs (physical-layers)
you need to understand how the technology will work and what tests it will need.
